In Belfast, a special music project is helping young people challenge stereotypes about marching bands. The Belfast Bands Forum started this project to give children a chance to learn music and show that marching bands can be a positive part of the community. Kendall, who is eleven, had never played an instrument before joining the lessons. She was nervous at first, but now she enjoys playing the drum with her friends. Danika, who is twelve, joined because she wanted to try something new and her uncle used to be a bass drummer. She encourages other kids to step out of their comfort zones and try new things, saying that her confidence has grown a lot since she started.

The music lessons take place at the Greater Village Regeneration Trust, where about a dozen children gather around tables with drum pads and sticks. Their tutor, Riley Mcauley, teaches them how to hold the sticks, play rhythms, and keep the tempo. Riley believes that learning music is a better way for kids to spend their time than being out on the streets. He says that music helps them express themselves and build confidence. The lessons last about an hour, and the children are learning not just how to play, but also how to work together as a group.

Harrison, who is fourteen, joined a marching band when he was eleven. He says that learning to play an instrument is different from playing video games or doing schoolwork. He likes that he can practice drumming at home and see himself improve. Carson, who is ten, started drumming after finding a drum at home. He has been learning for eighteen months and finds it very fun to discover new drumming techniques.

The Belfast Bands Forum says that for many children, this project is their only chance to get structured music lessons. The project has expanded to six different locations, including schools and community groups. Darren Leighton, the chairman of the Belfast Bands Forum, wants to break the stereotype that marching bands are only for certain communities in Northern Ireland. He hopes that by teaching music, children can learn about different cultures and traditions, and break down barriers between communities.

Leighton says that some people think negatively about marching bands, but he wants to show that there is a positive side to culture and identity. He is impressed by the talent of the children and says that some of them are incredible musicians. The project also works in primary schools that do not have music classes, helping to bring music education to more children.

Zara Gregg from the Greater Village Regeneration Trust says that the project has helped young people become leaders and role models. She believes that having a weekly activity gives children something to focus on and keeps them off the streets. Zara also points out that drumming is harder than it looks, but the children are doing well and enjoying the challenge.

The project is not just about drumming. Some children are learning to play other instruments like the harp, violin, and lyre. They practice together, read sheet music, and perform as a group. The project brings together children from different backgrounds, helping them make friends and learn new skills.

By joining the music lessons, the children are showing that marching bands can be fun and positive. They are learning to express themselves, build confidence, and challenge old stereotypes. The Belfast Bands Forum hopes that more children will join and experience the joy of making music together, helping to create a more inclusive and understanding community.
