Sideshore Sea Safety is a community project based in Exmouth, East Devon, that aims to teach over 1,000 schoolchildren about water safety and environmental protection. The project began in 2022 with just one school and a small number of pupils visiting the seafront area. Since then, it has expanded significantly, with 24 schools and hundreds of children now participating in activities designed to educate them about staying safe at the seaside. Bernie Rhodes, the project manager, highlights the positive impact the program has on children's mental health and well-being. She explains that spending time outdoors and learning how to be safe in and around water helps children build confidence and resilience. Moreover, the knowledge they gain equips them to handle emergencies if they or their family members find themselves in trouble while at the beach.

In addition to safety lessons, Sideshore Sea Safety focuses on environmental education. Children are taught about the importance of protecting the seaside environment and the dangers of plastic pollution. As part of the program, pupils collect plastic waste from the beach and use it to create artworks that promote ocean conservation. This hands-on approach helps children understand the impact of littering and encourages them to become advocates for the environment. Bernie Rhodes emphasizes that the project aims to instill a sense of responsibility in children, encouraging them to take their rubbish home and avoid littering. By doing so, they help preserve the natural beauty of the seaside for future visitors and generations.
