A study conducted in Hong Kong by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) demonstrated that these mussels could adapt to increased temperatures by altering their physiological processes. This adaptation helps them survive in conditions that are energetically demanding. The study's findings are significant as they suggest that mussels could continue to thrive despite the predicted rise in marine heatwaves in their native region.

The researchers' experiments involved simulating a heatwave in tanks where they placed mussels collected from Tolo Harbour. They observed that the mussels' heart rates and water filtration rates increased under the heat stress. However, after a period of recovery at normal temperatures, the mussels returned to their baseline physiological state. This indicates that their ability to function over the long term remains intact. While mussels show promise in enduring heatwaves, the study's lead author, Laura Falkenberg, cautions that other marine species may not be as fortunate.
