In the Democratic Republic of Congo, health officials are celebrating a positive development in the fight against Ebola. Five patients who were infected with the virus have now recovered and have been discharged from the hospital. The authorities are urging people to seek medical help quickly if they think they might have Ebola, as early treatment can save lives. On Sunday, a ceremony was held in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, to honor four nurses who survived Ebola and were released from the hospital. These nurses, including Makati Tagirabo and Baraka Bulambula, received certificates to recognize their recovery. The World Health Organization’s chief, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, visited Bunia and told the nurses that their recovery is proof that the outbreak can be stopped. He praised their courage and commitment, especially since health workers are often at the highest risk of catching the virus. Nurse Etienne Ezo, one of the survivors, shared how difficult it was to be isolated in the hospital, not knowing if he would survive. The first survivor in this outbreak, a laboratory worker, was released from the hospital last week. Health workers are on the front lines, and their recovery gives hope to others. The DR Congo’s Institute of Public Health said that these recoveries show how important early detection, good medical care, and community involvement are in fighting Ebola. Dr Mwamba Kazadi, the director of the institute, called the recoveries a victory and said that strong care and finding cases early make a big difference. However, there are still challenges. Some people in the community have attacked health centers because of strict rules about how to bury people who died from Ebola. These rules are meant to stop the virus from spreading, but they go against local traditions. Dr Tedros and the Congolese government said that the community’s trust and cooperation are key to stopping the outbreak. They asked everyone to keep washing their hands, go to the hospital early if they feel sick, and share correct information about Ebola. There are now more than 1,000 suspected cases of Ebola in DR Congo, with at least 246 deaths. Uganda, a neighboring country, has reported nine cases and one death. Despite the outbreak, life in some areas continues as usual. In Bunia, schools and markets are open, and people are going about their daily lives. This is the 17th Ebola outbreak in DR Congo’s history. The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which does not have an approved vaccine yet, though scientists are working on one. Most cases are in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces, but there have also been cases in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, and even outside Africa. In Brazil, health officials are investigating possible cases. Meanwhile, in Kenya, people are protesting against US plans to build an Ebola quarantine center for Americans at an air base. Locals are worried that the facility could bring the virus to their town, even though there have been no Ebola cases in Kenya. Health workers are taking many precautions, such as checking people’s temperatures and wearing protective suits and gloves. The government and health organizations are asking everyone to help by following safety rules, seeking medical care early, and spreading accurate information.
