Coventry University is hosting a unique exhibition that uses augmented reality, or AR, to display artworks created by disabled and neuro-divergent artists. Augmented reality is a technology that adds digital images, sounds, or other elements to the real world when viewed through devices like smartphones, tablets, or AR glasses. The AR part of the exhibition was developed by Dr Ben Kyneswood, who worked with digital specialist Derek Lawrence to bring the project to life. The artists involved are members of Coventry University's Disabled Staff and Carers Network and the Arts Riot Collective. Their works explore personal experiences of living with health conditions and how these experiences shape their identities.
One of the standout pieces in the exhibition is a digital kite, decorated with hand-knitted birds. This artwork is meant to symbolize the support that comes from being part of a community. The exhibition, titled 'This is me This is us,' is open at Coventry Broadgate Square until October 31. Another artwork combines photography and textiles to explore memories connected to living with physical limitations and how these memories relate to personal identity. Visitors can use AR technology to interact with the artworks, making them larger or adding digital effects that enhance the experience.
Dr Ben Kyneswood explained that AR allows technology and real life to blend together, creating new possibilities for artists. Because the artworks are digital, they can be displayed at any size the artist wants, even on a large scale. This gives artists more freedom to express themselves and share their stories. Dr Kyneswood hopes that the exhibition will attract new audiences and show how technology can open up new ways of telling cultural stories. The exhibition is an innovative way for people to experience art and learn about the lives of disabled and neuro-divergent individuals.
