Dumfries and Galloway, a region in Scotland, is well known for its literary history and connection to famous writers. But now, people are asking if this love for books can actually help the local economy and bring new life to small towns. Stewart Parsons and his wife Elizabeth, who moved from Lancashire, opened Gallovidia Books in Kirkcudbright in November 2021. They saw a shop for lease on St Mary Street and imagined turning it into a cozy, independent bookshop. Stewart described their shop as a 'real passion project' and said it turned out exactly as they hoped. He believes that bookshops can make people feel proud of their town and that every good town deserves a place for book lovers.
Wigtown, another town in the region, is famous for its annual book festival. The Wigtown Book Festival lasts for ten days every September and October and brings a special energy to the town. Isla Rosser-Owen, the new chief executive of the festival, says the event has helped the local economy by raising around fifty million pounds. She loves seeing the town come alive during the festival and believes that Dumfries and Galloway has a rich literary heritage, with connections to writers like Robert Burns, John Buchan, Dorothy L Sayers, and even rumors about Edgar Allan Poe visiting the area. Isla thinks Wigtown is a great example of how a small rural town can turn its fortunes around by focusing on books and literature.
The success of the Wigtown festival has inspired other events, such as the Spring Book Weekend, which is organized by local booksellers. These smaller festivals give people a chance to experience the town in a different way and enjoy books on a smaller scale. Isla has many ideas for the future, including adding audiobooks and gaming to the festival, since audiobooks are becoming more popular. There is also a new opportunity for writers called the Gavin Wallace Fellowship, which offers a year-long residency and funding for a Scotland-based writer to work in Dumfries and Galloway. Tabitha Mudaliar, creative director of DG Unlimited, says the region is full of creative people and has more than 600 members in her organization. She believes Dumfries and Galloway is special because of its creative community and the success of its authors. She also points out that Robert Burns, one of Scotland's most famous poets, lived in the area. All of these efforts show that books and creativity can help small towns grow, attract visitors, and support the local economy.
