Bristol has always been known for its lively music scene and energetic parties, often fueled by alcohol and sometimes drugs. But things are changing as more young people choose to live sober lives. Recently, Bristol Sober Spaces organized its first alcohol-free rave at the Trinity Centre, showing that you can have a great time dancing and listening to music without needing any substances. The event took place under a marquee decorated with strings of lights, creating a festive atmosphere. DJ Milly, also known as Milly on Air, has been sober for almost a decade. She shared that her journey to recovery was a matter of life or death, and she chose life. Milly started DJing while she was recovering, something she had always wanted to do but couldn't because of her addiction. Now, she is proud to perform at sober events and inspire others.

The alcohol-free rave welcomed everyone, whether they were avoiding substances for health, religious, recovery, or personal reasons. Milly admitted that being a sober DJ in the dance music world used to make her feel out of place, but she has noticed a big change recently. National statistics back this up, showing that more young adults are choosing not to drink. In 2022, 25 percent of people aged 16 to 24 were non-drinkers, compared to only 14 percent of those aged 55 to 64. The Trinity Centre event aimed to challenge the idea that nightlife always has to involve alcohol or drugs. The seven-hour rave featured local DJs like Misneach, Discombobulator, Steven Stone, and Josephine Gyasi, with drum and bass legends Nicky Blackmarket and Roni Size headlining. Roni Size said performing for a sober crowd was incredible and different from what he was used to. He explained that people often think you need alcohol or drugs to enjoy drum and bass, but that's not true.

Bristol Sober Spaces is a partnership between Bristol Drugs Project, which supports people with drug and alcohol issues, and Not Saints, a record label for those in recovery. Since starting in 2020, they have hosted several sober events. Volunteer Jade King said she stopped going to clubs when she first became sober 11 years ago, but now she enjoys dancing with friends at sober parties. She said, 'I don't feel embarrassed about dancing in front of others. ' These events are not just for people in recovery but also for anyone who wants to avoid hangovers. Another volunteer, Curtis Corbett-Blakemore, pointed out that more people are focusing on wellness and mental health. He said, 'There's a link between poor mental health and substance use. ' Sober events give people in recovery a safe space away from triggers. DJs at the event noticed that sober crowds are often more engaged and present. DJ Steven Stone said the energy and participation were amazing. Mina, a London-based music producer who runs an alcohol-free club night, said she was curious to see what would happen without alcohol. She found the experience beautiful, with people fully present and engaged. Sober raves are becoming more popular, offering a new way to enjoy music and dancing without alcohol or drugs.
