Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer recently held a meeting at Downing Street with top executives from major social media companies to discuss the safety of children online. He made it clear to the leaders of Meta, Snap, Google, TikTok, and X that the current situation cannot continue. Sir Keir, along with technology secretary Liz Kendall, questioned these companies about the steps they are taking to make their platforms safer for young users. He expressed his belief that social media can be made safer for British children, but also said that if safety cannot be guaranteed, it would be better to limit access than to allow harm to continue. The government is currently considering whether to ban social media for children under 16, following the example set by Australia.

The meeting was attended by several high-ranking officials from the tech industry, including Kate Alessi from Google UK, Markus Reinisch from Meta, Wifredo Fernandez from X, Alistair Law from TikTok, and Ronan Harris from Snap. Before the meeting, Downing Street noted that some companies have already taken steps to protect children, such as disabling auto-play features by default and giving parents more control over their children's screen time. During the meeting, Sir Keir highlighted concerns from parents and experts about the negative effects of social media on children, including problems with concentration, sleep, relationships, and their overall view of the world. He said that the evidence of harm is growing and that the current situation cannot be allowed to continue. Parents, he said, are not just asking for small changes but are questioning whether the entire system is suitable for children. He called on social media companies to take responsibility and work with the government to improve safety for young people.

Some experts believe the meeting was a way for the government to show it is taking the issue seriously. Professor Gina Neff from the University of Cambridge said the meeting allowed the government to appear proactive on online safety, especially at a time when there is pressure to be more lenient with American tech companies. On Wednesday, UK MPs voted against a ban on social media for under-16s, even though the House of Lords supported it. Ministers argued that a ban would be premature since the government is already considering new restrictions. Instead, MPs voted to give ministers the power to introduce their own rules. Conservative shadow education secretary Laura Trott criticized Labour MPs for voting against the ban and not supporting the removal of smartphones from schools, saying that other countries are doing more to protect children. Liberal Democrat education spokeswoman Munira Wilson said that it is time for real action to restrict the most harmful platforms for under-16s.

A report from the Molly Rose Foundation, an internet safety charity, found that more than 60 percent of underage Australians are still using social media despite the ban. The charity was founded by the family of Molly Russell, who died in 2017 after being exposed to harmful content online. Andy Burrows, the charity's chief executive, welcomed the meeting but warned against empty promises from tech companies. He urged Sir Keir Starmer to turn his words into action by committing to a new Online Safety Act that would prioritize safety over profit. Professor Amy Orben, a digital mental health expert at Cambridge University, said it is important to hold social media companies and their business models accountable. She pointed out that powerful algorithms make it difficult for young people to disconnect from social media. The government is also considering age restrictions for other online services, such as gaming sites and AI chatbots. The public consultation on these issues will close on 26 May, and Downing Street has already received more than 45,000 responses, as well as input from around 80 organizations, including schools and community groups. The government is now working to find the best way to protect children online.
