The town of Barnstaple in Devon is about to get a new and exciting art installation, and the best part is that the people who live there got to choose it. The winning piece is called The Tidal Triplets, created by artist Michael Pinsky. This installation will stand 11 feet tall and will be placed near the historic Queen Anne's Walk, a Grade I listed building in the town. The Tidal Triplets is made up of three tall poles, each topped with a round face that looks like a clock. These faces are not just for decoration—they will actually show the high and low tides of the River Taw, which flows through Barnstaple. They will also display the different phases of the tides, such as neap and spring tides, as well as the ebb and flood. The hands on these clock faces are designed to look like the hands on Barnstaple's famous Albert Clock, connecting the new art to the town's history.

This art project is part of a larger effort to make Barnstaple a more creative and vibrant place. The initiative is called Flourishing Barnstaple and is led by North Devon Council. The project received a three million pound grant from Arts Council England's Cultural Development Fund in 2023. The goal is to boost the town's cultural life and make it a more attractive place for both residents and visitors. When the project was announced, sixty artists showed interest in creating something for the town. Out of those, eleven proposals were selected for the public to vote on. After the votes were counted, The Tidal Triplets was chosen as the winner.

The council had to make some decisions about where exactly to put the new art. At first, there were concerns about the original location because of the area's historical importance. To address these concerns, the installation was moved 65 feet closer to a place called Tea on the Taw. The poles are designed to be 11 feet high to help prevent vandalism. In addition to The Tidal Triplets, the funding is also being used to refurbish the historic Bridge Chambers into a cultural hub and to develop new workspace studios for artists on Boutport Street. The planning committee approved the project, knowing they needed to move quickly to meet the funding deadline. The Tidal Triplets is expected to become a meaningful and visually striking addition to Barnstaple, celebrating the town's connection to the River Taw and its rich history while encouraging creativity and community pride.
