Mrs Smith's Cottage is a unique museum located in the village of Navenby, near Lincoln, in Lincolnshire. The museum is set inside a Victorian red-bricked cottage, which has been carefully preserved to look just as it did when Hilda Smith lived there. Hilda Smith was a remarkable woman who spent more than seventy years in the cottage, living there until she was 102 years old. After she passed away in 1995, the cottage was turned into a museum to show visitors what life was like in the English countryside during the twentieth century. The garden outside is filled with shrubs, and a bronze sign at the entrance welcomes guests.
More than a decade ago, Mrs Smith's Cottage had to close its doors because inspectors found that the roof was unsafe. This was a big setback for the museum, which had already been accredited by Arts Council England. The closure lasted for several years, but thanks to a one million pound restoration project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the cottage was repaired and improved. In August 2020, the museum reopened, allowing visitors to once again step inside and experience the charm of rural life from the past.
Recently, Mrs Smith's Cottage regained its accreditation from Arts Council England, which is a major achievement. This recognition is given only to museums that meet high standards for caring for their collections and providing a great experience for visitors. Richard Wright, the leader of North Kesteven District Council, said that the award is a fitting milestone for the museum and a sign of the dedication shown by staff and volunteers. Last year, the museum also received the Visit England Hidden Gem award, highlighting its special place in the community. Inside, visitors can see a table with a floral cover, old-fashioned furniture, a stove, and photographs on the walls. There are also displays outside, such as a colorful maypole and paintings of horses and farm machinery. Mrs Smith's Cottage is now recognized as an excellent museum, offering a window into the past for everyone who visits.
