Creative people in the West Midlands now have a great opportunity to bring their film and TV ideas to life, thanks to new grants of up to twenty thousand pounds. These grants are being offered to help local creative firms develop and produce their projects. Mayor Richard Parker, who is supporting this initiative, was recently seen in a brightly lit television studio, discussing the new funding with another industry professional. He wore a blue blazer and black-framed glasses, showing his commitment to the region’s creative future.
The West Midlands Combined Authority, Create Central, and Creative UK are working together to provide this funding. Their support has already led to the revival of the beloved children’s show Bagpuss and the creation of a new BBC drama called The Hairdresser Mysteries, both of which will be filmed in the West Midlands. In total, five TV series and three feature films have been commissioned with help from these organizations. Mayor Parker explained that these grants are designed to help local creatives move their ideas from the planning stage to actual production. He believes that these opportunities will not only create jobs but also attract investment to the region.
Recently, Mayor Parker signed an agreement with the BBC to nearly double the amount of money spent on production in the West Midlands, raising it to forty million pounds a year. This increase will lead to more jobs and training opportunities in the screen industry. Local filmmakers like Ché from Wolverhampton and Anton from Birmingham, who run Acclaimed Content, have already benefited from the fund. Their BBC Three documentary Queen of Trucks followed Shannan Paterson, who runs an HGV driving school in Willenhall. This project helped them secure more work, including a Channel 4 gameshow called Family Face Off. Ché said that getting the chance to develop Queen of Trucks was crucial, as it gave them their first commission and helped them connect with important people in the industry. Ed Shedd, chair of Create Central, said the next phase of the fund will offer even more opportunities for regional production companies to develop original ideas. Paul Ashton, head of film and TV at Creative UK, added that development funding is essential for regional screen companies to turn their ideas into successful projects.
