A month has passed since Israel was subjected to attacks by the militant group Hamas, leading to significant changes for both Palestinians and Israelis. The health ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza reports that nearly 9,500 individuals have been killed, with two-thirds being women and children, and primarily civilians. Al Quds, a widely read Palestinian daily, stated that 'Gaza has become a graveyard for thousands of innocent people'. Amidst the rubble of buildings destroyed by Israeli air strikes, a woman was seen performing household chores in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah.

Concerns are escalating over a potential regional conflagration. Iran, an ally of both Hamas and Hezbollah in Lebanon, has cautioned that the situation risks spiralling 'out of control' in a Middle East that has been transformed into a 'powder keg'. A Pentagon spokesperson expressed the United States' concern over all elements of Iran's threat network escalating their attacks in a manner that risks miscalculation, or tipping the region into war. US military advisers are currently stationed in Israel, and two American carrier groups have been deployed to the eastern Mediterranean. As tensions rise, the Israeli army is also on high alert on its northern border with Lebanon.
