A major outage at Telstra, Australia's largest telecommunications company, caused widespread problems across the country on Wednesday. The outage began at 4:30 in the morning and lasted for about 12 hours, affecting mobile calls, data services, and even emergency calls. Many people were unable to use their phones, and some could not reach emergency services when they needed help. Telstra's chief financial officer, Michael Ackland, apologized for the trouble and explained that the outage was caused by a software defect in time-keeping servers at data centers in Sydney and Melbourne. He made it clear that the problem was not due to a cyber attack.
The outage was described as 'intermittent,' meaning it came and went, but it still had a national impact. Telstra said they checked on customers who tried to call emergency services during the outage, and six people needed immediate help. Backup systems that are supposed to send emergency calls through other mobile carriers mostly worked, but the situation was still very concerning. Australia's Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, said the outage was 'deeply concerning' and stressed the importance of reliable communication services. The Communications Minister, Anika Wells, announced that the Australian Communication and Media Authority would investigate the outage to find out what went wrong and how to prevent it in the future.
The outage also caused major disruptions to transportation and businesses. In Victoria, all regional train services were cancelled, and some trains in New South Wales were also affected. National freight services were disrupted, which could impact the delivery of goods across the country. About 80,000 businesses that use the Tyro app for payments were unable to process transactions during the outage. This is not the first time Australia has faced such problems. Last September, a similar outage at Optus, the country's second-largest telecom company, left people unable to call emergency services for 13 hours, resulting in three deaths. Optus was fined for that incident. These repeated outages have raised concerns about the reliability of Australia's telecommunications networks and the need for stronger backup systems to protect people in emergencies.
