Salvador Dalí, the famous Spanish artist, was known for his iconic, 'very aggressive' moustache, which was more than mere facial hair but a bold artistic statement. In an exclusive BBC interview, Dalí shared the secret behind the most famous moustache in the world. The Surrealist artist sat down with veteran broadcaster Malcolm Muggeridge on the BBC's Panorama in 1955, and spoke about the most potent symbol of his artistic identity – his moustache. Muggeridge conceded that he should really be asking the famed Surrealist about the bizarre dreamlike images that made his name, but the sight of Dalí's flamboyantly lustrous whiskers proved irresistible to him. The first question that Muggeridge asked was about how Dalí managed to produce those magnificent moustaches. Dalí revealed that he used a natural product in the beginning, such as dates, to keep his moustache in shape. However, he later switched to a real product, Hungarian wax Pinaud, which he found in the Place Vendôme. He described his moustache as 'very gay, very pointed, very aggressive.
