The premiere of a film about a disabled surfer named Jimmy Simpson has taken the community by storm, with tickets selling out in just a few hours. Jimmy, who is 25 years old and hails from South Shields, began his surfing journey last year. He was born with a condition known as dyskinetic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, which affects his ability to move. The documentary, titled Sand Dancers, produced by Red Stamp Productions, chronicles his inspiring attempt to compete in the English Adaptive Surfing Championship held in Bristol. A special screening of the film took place at a cinema in Boldon, South Tyneside, where around 270 people gathered to watch. Jimmy expressed his amazement at the overwhelming response, stating, 'I can't believe this is now in the cinema. I'm over the moon. ' He hopes that the film will raise awareness about adapted sports and encourage people to look beyond his disability. At the premiere, Jimmy was accompanied by his personal assistant, Lauryn Bell, and his surfing instructor, Nick Jones. The three of them sat together in the cinema, sharing a moment of joy and excitement. Lauryn, who plays a crucial role in helping Jimmy surf, remarked on the emotional atmosphere of the event, saying, 'It's been great getting everybody here and seeing how emotional everyone was. It just shows how the community of South Shields came together. ' The film showcases the efforts of the community to create a special surfboard for Jimmy and teach him how to surf. Connor Langley, the producer of Sand Dancers, shared his thoughts on the project, stating that both Jimmy's story and the support from the town are truly inspirational. He emphasized the importance of feeling included and supported by those around us. 'When you're shooting, you're not really there in the moment and you're focusing on the shot. It wasn't until we got the first cut of the film and I sat back and it got me [crying],' he said. Due to the high demand for tickets, the original screening had to be moved to a larger venue, highlighting the community's eagerness to support Jimmy and his journey.
