Lisa Nandy said she would not reveal details before the Prime Minister's announcement, but she did say that most people who responded to the government's consultation supported a ban for under-16s. She admitted that some young people might find ways to get around the rules, as seen in Australia, but she believes the ban would still change how children think about using social media.

Nandy stressed that there is an urgent need to help young people now. She said the government cannot just stand by and do nothing when it is clear that children need protection. She repeated that tech companies have had enough time to make their products safer, and if they do not, they should lose the right to market to children. Some people, like Conservative shadow defence secretary James Cartlidge, said it is hard to make laws about technology because it changes so quickly. However, he agreed that a social media ban is the right thing to do. The government has also asked the public about other ideas, such as turning off features that make social media addictive or setting overnight curfews to help children sleep better. In Australia, children are banned from using some social media apps, but some charities in the UK do not support a similar ban. The government is still listening to parents, teachers, and young people to decide the best way to keep children safe online.
