Beach visitors in County Down are being asked to help scientists study how the coastline is changing by taking part in a project called CoastSnap. This project is part of a larger effort called Co-creating Coastal Resilience, or CoCor, which aims to understand and protect coastlines. At Tyrella Beach, a special metal phone holder has been set up on a post. Anyone with a smartphone can place their phone in the holder, take a picture of the beach through a fixed frame, and upload it to the CoastSnap website by scanning a QR code. This simple action turns regular beachgoers into citizen scientists, helping to create a large collection of photos that show how the beach changes over time.
The idea behind CoastSnap is to gather many photos from the same spot, so scientists can compare them and see how the beach shifts with the seasons, weather, and tides. Tyrella Beach was chosen for this project because local volunteers have already done important work there, like planting new grass to protect the sand dunes and putting up fences to keep the area safe. Melanie Biausque, a geomorphologist with Geological Survey Northern Ireland, is leading the project. She says that the coast is always moving because of natural forces like waves and wind, but now, climate change is causing even bigger changes, such as rising sea levels and more frequent storms. By studying the photos collected through CoastSnap, scientists hope to understand these changes better and find ways to protect the coastline.
Taking part in CoastSnap is easy and anonymous. All you need is your phone, and you do not have to share your name unless you want to. After taking a photo, you can also add comments about what you see, like new plants or signs of erosion. The project will run throughout the year, and more CoastSnap sites will be set up in other places soon. By working together, scientists and the public can learn more about how the coast is changing and what can be done to keep it safe for the future. Regular visitors to the beach can make a big difference by helping to collect important information that will help protect the coastline for years to come.
