Video games that include loot boxes will soon be given a minimum age rating of 16 across Europe, including the UK. This decision comes from the Pan-European Game Information group, known as PEGI, which is responsible for rating video games to help parents and players understand which games are suitable for different age groups. Loot boxes are features in games where players can spend real or virtual money to buy random items, and many experts believe they are similar to gambling because players do not know what they will receive. PEGI’s new rule means that any game with loot boxes will automatically be rated PEGI 16, and in some cases, the rating could go up to PEGI 18.
The new ratings will start in June and will only apply to games released after that date. PEGI’s system is used in 38 countries, and their ratings range from 3 to 18, showing which age group a game is suitable for. The goal is to give parents clearer information so they can make better decisions about what games their children play. Dirk Bosmans, the director of PEGI, said these changes will give more useful and transparent advice to parents and players. Emily Tofield, who leads the Young Gamers & Gamblers Education Trust, said this is a good step, but she thinks the higher ratings should also be given to older games that already have loot boxes.
There are other changes too. Games with paid battle passes will now get a PEGI 12 rating, and games with NFTs will be rated PEGI 18. Games that make players return every day or punish them for not playing could also get higher ratings. If a game does not let players block or report others online, it will get the highest rating of PEGI 18. Some experts and journalists say these changes are positive, but they also believe parents need to pay attention and learn about these new rules to protect their children. The UK government has not made any laws about loot boxes yet, but it has asked game companies to make sure players under 18 cannot buy loot boxes without their parents’ permission. The Advertising Standards Authority also removes ads that do not clearly say if a game has loot boxes. Overall, these new rules are meant to help families make safer choices about video games.
