Scotland's economy is getting a big boost from green jobs, according to new research by the Confederation of British Industry, or CBI. These jobs are worth £10. 2 billion to the Scottish economy, making up almost 5 percent of the country's total economic output. That's more than twice as much as the farming sector.

Net-zero industries include jobs building and maintaining wind farms, hydropower plants, and installing solar panels and heat pumps in homes. The report highlights that some areas, like Perth and Kinross, have an even bigger share of green jobs. In that region, 12 percent of the local economy is connected to net-zero work. The goal of net-zero is to stop adding more planet-warming gases to the atmosphere. The UK has promised to reach net-zero by 2050, but Scotland wants to get there even faster, by 2045. Scotland has an advantage because it has more land for planting trees, which absorb carbon dioxide.

The report also puts green jobs in context with the oil and gas industry. It points out that about 1,000 oil and gas jobs are lost every month, but green jobs are growing. There are more than 3,000 businesses in Scotland working in the net-zero sector, most of them small or medium-sized. One example is Gensource, a company in Musselburgh that installs solar panels and electric vehicle chargers. It started with just two people four years ago and now has 20 employees, including apprentices. The company grew quickly after energy prices went up because of events like Russia's invasion of Ukraine and other global conflicts. Josh King, the director of Gensource, says that net-zero targets are good for business and jobs, especially when energy prices are unstable. He believes that renewable energy can help people save money and avoid surprises in their bills.

The report also mentions that solar panels are being put on public buildings, including schools. This is happening while politicians argue about how to reach net-zero and fight climate change. Some political parties say the country can't afford the changes needed, but scientists warn that net-zero is the only way to protect against problems like wildfires and extreme weather. The study found that people working in green jobs earn about 5 percent more than the Scottish average, with many jobs in engineering. In Perth and Kinross, green jobs are focused on hydropower and wind farms. In Aberdeen, the focus is on offshore wind, hydrogen, and carbon capture. East Lothian is known for electricity transmission and manufacturing.

The report says Scotland is in a strong position to grow its green economy, with £211 billion in planned investments. That's about a third of all the UK's green investment. Experts say that net-zero industries are now a key part of Scotland's economy and are growing in many regions. Clean energy is expanding across the UK, and Scotland is leading the way. The research shows that green jobs are not just a small part of the economy—they are becoming a major force for growth and change.
