貝爾法斯特音樂節：愛爾蘭音樂、舞蹈和文化席捲全城！

Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the world’s largest festival of Irish music and culture, has officially begun in Belfast for the first time. The opening ceremony took place at Belfast City Hall, where thousands gathered to watch performances by Irish dancers from the Reilly School of Dancing. The dancers wore matching green and gold dresses and performed on stage with a live band. The festival will run for eight days, ending on 9 August, and features over 200 events across the city. These include live music sessions, storytelling, interactive workshops, dance classes, and family fun days, making it a vibrant celebration for people of all ages.

The opening event was attended by important figures such as the Irish President Catherine Connolly, First Minister Michelle O’Neill, Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, and the new Secretary of State Sir Chris Bryant. President Connolly expressed how special it was for the Fleadh to be held in Belfast, saying the city would welcome visitors from all over Ireland and the world. She described the festival as a celebration of shared culture and the universal appeal of music, song, and dance. First Minister O’Neill said she was proud that Belfast was hosting the event, emphasizing unity and togetherness. Deputy First Minister Little-Pengelly highlighted that culture strengthens the community and brings people closer.

Visitors from different places shared their excitement. Ellen Wright, originally from Belfast but now living in Australia, said the Fleadh helped her reconnect with her heritage. She enjoyed seeing people dance and sing traditional Irish songs. Ruairí Roantree from County Wicklow described the opening ceremony as brilliant and loved the lively atmosphere. Danny Norman from Belfast was proud to see his children perform and said the event was great for the city, bringing energy and life to Belfast.

The festival’s main outdoor stage, the Gig Rig, is set up outside Belfast City Hall and will host free live performances every day. In addition to city centre events, there are more than 90 community gatherings in neighbourhood venues, focusing on families and local communities. To ensure safety and allow for performances, the city centre has been pedestrianised, with road closures and changes to bus routes. Residents and visitors are advised to plan their journeys and use public transport, as driving through the city centre will be difficult.

Local businesses are preparing for a busy week. Michelle Downey from the Downey Group said they are planning for eight days of celebrations, similar to St Patrick’s Day every day. John Lavery from Fish City mentioned the excitement in Belfast and said his business had invested heavily to get ready. Emily Sparling from Peter Keegan’s Bar said her business spent £60,000 and hired extra staff for the event. Dominic Lavery from Lavery’s Bar said planning took several months and expects the festival to feel like a series of busy Saturday nights.

Public transport is being adjusted to support the festival. Road closures and diversions are in place, and people are encouraged to use buses and trains. Free shuttle buses will operate from park and ride sites, and there will be extra late-night services. Taxis will have dedicated pick-up and drop-off points around the event zone. Visitors from the Republic of Ireland can use cross-border coach and train services to reach Belfast.

The Irish language is central to the festival experience. The Irish Language Hub at The Mac offers free taster classes, arts and crafts, circus skills, and family entertainment. Bilingual signs and information will help visitors navigate the festival. Events also celebrate Ulster-Scots language and culture, making Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann a diverse and inclusive celebration of Irish traditions in Belfast.
