One of the highlights of the collection is a large sperm whale tooth from 1829. It was carved by Frederick Myrick and shows a three-masted sailing ship called the Susan near the coast of Japan. The tooth also has an eagle and some words carved into it, including 'The Susan on the coast of Japan' and 'Death to the living, long life to the killers. ' The museum says that this scrimshaw collection is probably the biggest outside the United States. The art will be displayed in a special gallery so that visitors can learn about the history and creativity of the sailors who made these pieces.

The museum is housed in the old Victorian Dock Offices, a historic building in Hull. The renovation has doubled the space open to the public, which means that staff can now display fifty percent more objects from the museum's collection. Robin Diaper, the curator of social and maritime history, says that the new museum will tell Hull's story in a richer and more ambitious way than ever before. He believes that Hull is a great maritime city, made even greater by its people and their connection to the sea. The museum will not only show Hull's role as one of Britain's important maritime cities, but also share the human stories, creativity, and global connections that grew from life at sea. The museum is part of a bigger project that includes restoring the Spurn Lightship and renovating the old North End Shipyard on the River Hull. These changes are meant to create a new visitor attraction that celebrates Hull's long relationship with the sea. The leader of the city council, Mike Ross, said that the plans for the museum have become much more ambitious than they were when first approved in 2019.
