In the cliffs of south Gower, Wales, there is a cave called Bacon Hole that has become very important to scientists. Inside this cave, there are ten red lines painted on the wall. These lines were first noticed in 1912, but for many years, people thought they were just made by nature, not by humans. Recently, archaeologists have used new scientific methods to prove that these lines are actually the oldest cave art in Britain, dating back at least 17,100 years. This makes them the oldest known prehistoric art in north-western Europe.

George Nash, an archaeologist who specializes in prehistoric art, led the research. He believes that the lines might have been used as a way for people to communicate, maybe as tally marks to show how many years someone had been in the cave. However, the true meaning of the art is still a mystery. At the time the art was made, the area around the cave was very different from today. The land was a cold, treeless plain, and the Bristol Channel was a rich area full of animals like mammoths, bison, horses, elk, and reindeer. Hunter-gatherers would have come to this area to find food and shelter, using the many caves along the Gower Peninsula.

For a long time, the red lines in Bacon Hole were ignored. In 1928, experts said the marks were just red minerals coming through the rock, not art made by people. The art was almost forgotten until 2022, when scientists took another look. They used a special dating method called uranium-thorium dating to test the pigments. This test showed that the lines were made by humans, not by natural processes. The lines are covered by a layer of mineral, which means the art could be even older than 17,100 years.

The cave is now protected by a steel grill to prevent vandalism, and only bats can enter. Bacon Hole is managed by National Trust Cymru, but it is not yet a scheduled monument. Archaeologists think it should be, to keep the art safe for the future. The discovery at Bacon Hole comes ten years after George Nash found another piece of ancient art in a nearby cave called Cathole Cave. That art, a picture of a reindeer, was made at least 14,000 years ago.

The research was done by an international team, including scientists from the universities of Southampton and Swansea, with help from the National Trust and the Bradshaw Foundation. David Thomas, an archaeologist with National Trust Cymru, said it is exciting to know that the oldest cave art in Britain is in Wales. He said it is amazing to think about people living there over 17,000 years ago, making marks on the rocks and creating art. The team hopes that this discovery will help everyone understand more about the people who lived in Wales long ago and the special places they left behind.
