In Doha, Qatar, a new museum called Lawh Wa Qalam has opened to celebrate the life and work of MF Husain, one of India's most famous artists. MF Husain was known for his dynamic and muscular horses, which are some of the most recognizable paintings in modern art. His style combined Cubist-inspired modernism with traditional Indian themes, resulting in bold and vibrant canvases that often depicted scenes from history and mythology. Husain's creativity extended beyond painting; he also made two Bollywood films, although they did not succeed at the box office. His art was sometimes controversial, especially his paintings of nude Hindu goddesses, which angered some groups in India and led to his self-imposed exile. In Qatar, Husain found a new sense of peace and inspiration, engaging deeply with Arab civilization and culture.

The Lawh Wa Qalam museum is designed to be more than just a tribute to Husain's art. The architect, Martand Khosla, worked with the Qatar Foundation to turn Husain's sketch into a functional and philosophical space. The museum's layout is labyrinthine, encouraging visitors to wander and explore, much like following Husain's own creative journey. Each gallery begins with a quote from Husain, inviting visitors to step into his thoughts and experiences. The museum also features interactive galleries, where visitors can learn about Husain's life through personal objects, oral histories from friends and collaborators, and immersive displays of his work.

One of the museum's main attractions is 'Seeroo fi al ardh' or 'Walk In The Land,' a multimedia project that Husain worked on during his final years. This ambitious installation uses movement, sound, and mechanical choreography to tell the story of civilization. The museum also highlights Husain's interest in Islamic texts and Arab history, which became a major focus in his later years. In 2008, Husain accepted a commission from Qatar's Sheikh Moza bint Nasser to create a series of paintings celebrating Arab civilization. Using a rich palette of warm, earthy colors, he depicted Islamic astronomers, philosophers, and desert wanderers with the same energetic lines that defined his Indian art.

One of the most notable paintings in the museum is 'The Battle of Badr,' which shows a key moment in Islamic history. Husain was commissioned to create 99 works for Qatar, but completed only 35 before his death. The museum plans to rotate these paintings over time, allowing visitors to experience the full range of his work. By displaying both his Indian and Arab-inspired pieces, the museum offers a new perspective on Husain's legacy, showing how his art was shaped by many different cultures and histories.
