India is aiming to become a major player in the world of strawberries, a fruit that is mostly grown in the western region of Mahabaleshwar. This area, located high in the mountains, provides the perfect climate for strawberries, with cool weather from November to March and light, well-drained soil. About 85 percent of all strawberries in India are grown here. However, farming strawberries is not as easy as it sounds. It requires a lot of hard work and money, and the weather can be unpredictable. Sheetal Danavle, a farmer in Mahabaleshwar, explains that sudden heavy rains can destroy an entire crop, causing big losses. Every year, farmers like her have to buy new young plants, which is expensive. If the season goes well, they can earn twice what they spend, but it is always a risky business.
Despite the success of strawberry farming in Mahabaleshwar, Indian farmers still depend on plant varieties from the US, Italy, and Spain. These varieties are developed over many years and are protected by patents. Farmers import certified mother plants, which are then checked by the government before being used to grow new plants. These mother plants are grown in special containers filled with coconut husk instead of soil, and advanced irrigation systems are used to control the water and temperature. This high-tech method helps farmers produce more strawberries, but they still rely on foreign plants.
To change this, scientists at Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, an agricultural university, are working with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre to develop a new kind of strawberry that can handle India's hot weather. They use controlled gamma irradiation to create genetic changes in the plants, hoping to make a variety that is big, firm, and can survive heatwaves. This process could take 10 to 15 years, but in the meantime, the university is helping farmers by teaching them the best ways to grow strawberries in Mahabaleshwar. Some large farms are also investing in new technology, like hydroponics, which allows strawberries to be grown all year without soil. Farmers are using weather monitoring systems and artificial intelligence to decide when to water or spray their crops. Some are even building vertical towers to grow more plants in a small space. While these new methods are expensive and risky for small farmers, some are finding success by inviting tourists to their farms to pick strawberries and buy them directly. With these efforts, India hopes to become one of the world's top strawberry producers.
