The European Union has warned Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, that it could face a major fine if it does not change the way its social media platforms are designed. The EU is concerned that features like infinite scrolling, videos that play automatically, and personalized recommendations are making people, especially children and teenagers, use the apps for longer than is healthy. These features, the EU says, can encourage compulsive use and may lead to unhealthy habits, particularly among young users.

According to the European Commission, Meta could be fined up to 6 percent of its total global annual revenue if it does not make suitable changes. The Commission's preliminary findings say that the endless stream of content on Facebook and Instagram can put the brain into 'autopilot mode,' making it hard for users to stop scrolling. The EU is especially worried about how these platforms affect children and teens, who may spend too much time online, especially late at night. The Commission also criticized Meta's time-management tools, saying they can be easily dismissed and do not really help reduce the amount of time young people spend on the apps.

Meta responded by saying it disagrees with the EU's findings and believes it has already taken important steps to protect teens. The company says it has introduced Teen Accounts that automatically protect young users and give parents control over things like screen time and nighttime access. However, the EU argues that these parental controls only work if parents have the time and technical skills to use them properly. The Commission also said Meta did not do enough to assess the risks of its platform designs or the amount of time children spend on them.

This is not the final decision from the EU. Meta now has a chance to review the evidence and respond formally. The EU has been increasing its efforts to make big tech companies do more to protect users online, especially children. Soon, an expert panel will give new recommendations on how to shield children from harmful online content. Some countries, like France, are even considering banning social media for minors, following Australia's example of restricting access for those under 16.

The EU's actions show that it is serious about making the internet safer for young people. Meta says it wants to work with the EU to provide safe and positive online experiences for teens. As the EU continues to push for stronger protections, more rules and changes could be coming soon to help keep children safe online.
