Rhonda Wilson was a remarkable figure in Birmingham's art scene for over thirty years. She was not only a talented photographer but also a cultural entrepreneur, journalist, and activist who worked hard to support other artists and fight for women's rights. Now, her legacy is being honored through a new exhibition and community archive called Seeing Rhonda, held at The Old Print Works in Balsall Heath. This exhibition features a wide range of items from Rhonda's life, including her photographs, letters, posters, publications, and even her personal notes and sketches. These pieces give visitors a deeper understanding of her work and the impact she had on the community.
Dr Annette Naudin from Birmingham City University described Rhonda as a 'formidable trailblazer. ' Instead of focusing only on her own photography, Rhonda spent much of her time helping others develop their careers. She was especially passionate about supporting women in the arts and making sure their contributions were recognized. One of her most important projects was the Worth Paying For campaign, which highlighted the low pay and difficult working conditions faced by women in Birmingham during the 1980s. Through powerful images and personal stories, Rhonda showed the strength and positivity of these women, making them visible to the public and challenging the idea that they were invisible or unimportant.
Rhonda also played a key role in creating opportunities for artists in Birmingham and beyond. She co-founded Poseurs Studio and Gallery in 1989 with photographer Ming de Nasty and launched several other initiatives, such as Seeing the Light and Rhubarb-Rhubarb. She was always looking for new ways to support artists and bring attention to their work. Rhonda passed away in 2014, but her influence continues to be felt. She was awarded an MBE for her contributions to photography and international trade. The Seeing Rhonda exhibition is open to the public and offers a chance to explore her archive, learn about her achievements, and appreciate the lasting difference she made in the world of art and culture.
