In Somerset, a unique exhibition is taking place at the Shoemakers Museum in Street, celebrating the sentimental value of shoes owned by local people. The museum, which is marking its first anniversary, has chosen 12 pairs of shoes from the community, each representing a month since the museum opened. These shoes are not just ordinary footwear; they are filled with memories and stories that are important to their owners.
Liz Fox, one of the organizers, contributed her white Dr Martens boots that she wore on her wedding day. She described how she got married on a farm near Petherton, arriving by tractor in a traditional wedding dress with her boots hidden underneath. Although her marriage lasted only ten years, the boots have remained with her, serving as a reminder of that special day. Liz explained that the exhibition is about more than just shoes; it's about the memories and emotions connected to them.
Another highlight of the exhibition is a Clark's Desert Boot with Pat Snee's face printed on it. Pat received this unique shoe as a retirement gift after working at Clarks for 50 years. He started at the company when he was just 15 years old, working his way up from the shop floor to management. Pat shared that one of his favorite memories was being asked to turn on the Christmas lights at Clarks because he was the longest-serving employee. He joked that he was usually asked to turn the lights off, so it was a special moment for him.
Rosie Martin, the museum's director, also contributed shoes from her family. One of them is a black Italian men's shoe that her husband bought during the time when Italy switched from the Lira to the Euro. He thought he was getting a bargain, but the shoe turned out to be expensive. He wore the shoe at their wedding in 2004, and now their 19-year-old son will take the shoe with him to university.
The exhibition also features other interesting shoes, such as a high-heeled shoe with intricate stitching and a thick heel, showing the craftsmanship of Clarks over the past 200 years. The museum itself is a modern building with large pillars and a sign, and inside, visitors can see many shoes and photographs that tell the story of shoemaking in Somerset.
The Shoemakers Museum hopes that this exhibition will encourage more people to share their own shoe stories. Shoes are often connected to important moments in our lives, like weddings, retirements, or family traditions. By displaying these shoes, the museum is helping people remember and celebrate those moments. The exhibition will run until September 6, giving visitors plenty of time to see the shoes and learn about the memories behind them.
If you have a shoe with a special story, the museum invites you to get in touch and share your experience. The exhibition is a reminder that even everyday objects like shoes can hold deep meaning and connect us to our past.
