A large and important collection of items that once belonged to the famous English writer Thomas Hardy is now available for the public to view for free. It also includes school exercise books, architectural drawings, sketches, and music books from the Hardy family. Among the most valuable items are the original handwritten manuscripts for three of Hardy's major novels. These manuscripts give readers a chance to see how Hardy wrote and edited his stories.

The collection is kept at the Dorset History Centre in Dorchester, and anyone can visit to see it for free by making an appointment. There is also an online catalogue that lists everything in the collection. Ryan Hope, a council member responsible for culture, described the collection as 'remarkable. ' Ruth Burton from the Dorset History Centre said the letters are a 'wonderful resource' because they show how many people Hardy knew and how much he influenced others. The letters include messages from other famous writers like Robert Louis Stevenson and Virginia Woolf, as well as from Dame Millicent Fawcett, who fought for women's rights. The letters talk about literature, important events like World War One, animal rights, and women's suffrage.

Thomas Hardy is one of England's most respected novelists and poets. He wrote well-known books such as 'Jude the Obscure,' 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles,' and 'Far From the Madding Crowd. ' Hardy often used real places in Dorset as settings for his stories, but he changed their names. For example, he called Dorchester 'Casterbridge' and Bournemouth 'Sandbourne. ' Hardy was born in Dorset and lived there for most of his life until he died in 1928 at the age of 87. The collection began when Hardy gave his manuscript of 'The Mayor of Casterbridge' to the Dorset County Museum in 1911. After his death, more of his personal items, letters, and manuscripts were added to the collection. The Dorset Archives Trust helped start a project in 2024 to organize and catalogue everything. Mark Chutter from the Thomas Hardy Society said the collection is 'fascinating, intriguing and highly eclectic. ' The collection is expected to inspire new generations of readers and researchers to learn more about Hardy and Dorset's cultural history.
