Jean Martyn is a talented pianist who became well-known after reaching the finals of Britain's Got Talent 15 years ago. Just before she was supposed to perform at the O2 arena, her son called to tell her that her mother had passed away. The news was shocking and heartbreaking, but Jean remembered her mother's encouragement. Her mother had always supported her music, and Jean felt her mother's words telling her to go on stage and play. She performed with more passion than ever before. After her performance, the host, Stephen Mulhern, brought her to the front of the stage so she could share her story with the audience. The crowd was silent, and then everyone stood up to give her a standing ovation. Jean was moved to tears by their support.

Jean's journey to Britain's Got Talent was unexpected. She lived in Brewood, near Wolverhampton, and worked as a music teacher. Her late husband entered her into the competition without telling her. Out of 60,000 people who applied, Jean was chosen to audition. She arrived at the NEC in Birmingham with her portable piano wrapped in a duvet. Someone joked that she might be carrying a coffin. Jean played a boogie woogie version of a Christmas carol for the producers, who invited her to the next round in Manchester. After a long day, she was one of the last contestants to perform for the judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, and Michael McIntyre. Amanda Holden described her as 'Victoria Wood on acid' because of her lively and funny style. Jean made it to the final round, joining nine other talented contestants.

The TV show changed Jean's life. She went on tour with the other finalists, performing in major arenas across the UK. She remembers the tour as being full of laughter and fun. Jean was 59 when she competed on the show, and she celebrated her 60th birthday with the other finalists in London. When she performed in Birmingham, many of her former students came to see her. Jean is still in touch with Stephen Mulhern and is grateful to Simon Cowell for his kindness after her mother's death. She retired from teaching so she could focus on performing. Jean has played in theaters, at outdoor events, and even at CarFest with Chris Evans. She has performed in the United States, Europe, the United Arab Emirates, and India. Along the way, she has met many celebrities, played for royalty, and appeared on Holland's Got Talent. Now, Jean lives in Stoke-on-Trent with her Dutch husband Hans, whom she married in 2020.
