A new study from Cambridge University is raising concerns about the use of artificial intelligence, or AI, in toys designed for very young children. The researchers observed how children between the ages of three and five interacted with a soft, AI-powered toy called Gabbo. Gabbo is designed to encourage preschoolers to talk and use their imagination by having conversations with them. Parents who took part in the study were interested in Gabbo because they hoped it would help their children develop language and communication skills. However, the study found that the children often had trouble talking with Gabbo. The toy sometimes ignored them, talked over them, or could not tell the difference between a child’s voice and an adult’s. When a child said something affectionate, like 'I love you,' Gabbo responded with a confusing message: 'As a friendly reminder, please ensure interactions adhere to the guidelines provided. Let me know how you would like to proceed. '
The researchers are worried that these kinds of responses could be confusing for young children, who are just learning how to interact with others and understand emotions. For example, when a three-year-old told Gabbo, 'I’m sad,' the toy replied, 'Don’t worry! I’m a happy little bot. Let’s keep the fun going. What shall we talk about next? ' This kind of answer might make a child feel like their sadness is not important. Dr. Emily Goodacre, one of the study’s authors, said that toys like Gabbo could 'misread emotions or respond inappropriately,' which could leave children feeling unsupported. The researchers believe that just as there are rules to make sure toys are physically safe, there should also be rules to make sure they are safe for children’s feelings and mental health.
The company that makes Gabbo, Curio, says they take their responsibility seriously and have built their toys so that parents can control how they are used. Curio also says they are making research into how children interact with AI toys a top priority. The Children’s Commissioner, Dame Rachel de Souza, agrees that there should be more rules for AI in early childhood settings. She says that while AI can be useful, it needs to be carefully checked to make sure it is safe for young children. Some nursery workers are not convinced that AI toys are helpful for young children. June O’Sullivan, who runs a group of nurseries in London, says she has not seen any proof that AI toys help children learn. She believes that children learn best from real people, not from robots. Actor and children’s rights campaigner Sophie Winkleman also thinks that young children should not use AI toys, because the risks are greater than the benefits. The researchers recommend that parents keep AI toys in shared spaces where they can watch their children play, and that they read privacy policies carefully. They hope that by raising these concerns, more attention will be paid to making sure AI toys are safe for all children.
