Apple is introducing a new feature to iPhones to deter thieves from accessing critical device data, even if they know the user's passcode. On Tuesday, the tech giant released the first beta-test version of iOS 17. 3, which includes a new Stolen Device Protection feature. This enhancement will necessitate the use of Face ID or Touch ID, eliminating the option to use a passcode, when accessing stored passwords, modifying Apple ID settings, viewing payment information, and deactivating Find My iPhone.
In certain instances, thieves have managed to access personal data on iPhones, pilfer money, and disrupt a person's digital life by knowing the device passcode. For instance, a thief could observe users input their passcode into their iPhone in a public place before absconding with the device. By mandating Face ID or Touch ID for accessing critical parts of the iPhone, a thief would be significantly hindered in their ability to cause damage. Specifically, it would be more difficult to erase the device and resell it. Apple has not specified when the new feature will be available to all customers, but the company intends to release iOS 17. 3 publicly early next year.
'As threats to user devices continue to evolve, we work tirelessly to develop powerful new protections for our users and their data,' Apple stated. 'In the rare cases where a thief can observe the user entering the passcode and then steal the device, Stolen Device Protection adds a sophisticated new layer of protection. ' The enhancement will introduce a one-hour delay and require a second Face ID or Touch ID scan for the most sensitive tasks, including changing an Apple ID password, disabling the Stolen Device Protection feature, creating a new passcode, and deactivating Touch ID or Face ID. However, there will be no delay if users are at a known location, such as their home or workplace.
