Ed Sheeran has praised new changes to the school curriculum in England, saying they will allow more students to study music and other creative subjects. The government has decided to update what is taught in schools, removing old systems that made it harder for kids to take music and arts classes. After a major review of the curriculum, children will also learn about important topics like how to spot fake news, understand mortgages, and improve their financial literacy. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said the goal is to make the curriculum more exciting while keeping strong basics in English, maths, and reading. Head teachers agree the changes are sensible, but they warn that schools will need enough funding and teachers to make it work.

The review was started last year to help close the gap between students from different backgrounds. One big change is the removal of the English Baccalaureate, or EBacc, which measured schools by how many students took certain subjects like English, maths, science, history, geography, and a language. The Department for Education said this system was too limiting and that getting rid of it will encourage students to study a wider range of subjects, including the arts. Ed Sheeran, who campaigned for these changes, said that music education gave him confidence and helped his mental health. He believes that without support from his school and music teacher, he would not be a musician today. He also called for more support for music teachers.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer thanked Sheeran for his efforts and promised to make arts education a priority. The Arts Council England also welcomed the changes, saying it is a great day for future creative talent. Other reforms include teaching financial literacy in maths, focusing on spotting misinformation, reducing time spent on exams, and making sure all students can take three science GCSEs. There will also be more lessons on climate change and diversity. The review suggested giving speaking and listening skills the same importance as reading and writing. Some people worry about how schools will pay for these changes, and others think removing the EBacc might mean fewer students take history, geography, or languages. The government says it will give schools time to prepare and wants students to have a wide range of options. Experts say the changes are a step forward, but schools need enough resources to make them work.
