A group of artists have come together to create a unique experience for visitors at Salisbury River Park in Wiltshire. The new Artwork Trail features music and murals that celebrate the history of the area and the wildlife that lives there. Local artist Zac Newham designed picnic benches inspired by fish, while Jane Edden created a dragonfly sculpture. Illustrator Francesca McLean contributed her drawings, adding to the variety of art along the trail. Clare Christopher from Studio Response, the group that helped organize the project, explained that each artist brought their own style and ideas, but all focused on the themes of nature, community, and the special character of the River Park.
The Salisbury River Park runs alongside the River Avon and is a popular green space for the city. The trail includes murals on buildings, such as one by Fred Fieber on the coach park toilet block and another by Tech Moon on the central car park toilet block. These murals highlight animals like the Atlantic Salmon and European Otter, which are found in the area. Jane Edden’s sculpture, called Fleeting, is located near Mill Stream Approach and looks like butterfly wings. Composer Karen Wimhurst added another layer to the trail by creating eight musical pieces inspired by the River Park and the nearby Avon Valley Nature Reserve. These pieces can be heard at different spots along the trail, making the experience even more engaging.
To help visitors explore the trail, a map has been created that links all the artworks together. There is also a version of the map designed for children, making it easier for families to enjoy the trail. The project was curated by Studio Response in partnership with Salisbury City Council, and the map was released by the Environment Agency. Andy Wallis, who leads the Salisbury River Park project at the Environment Agency, said the trail was designed to help people reconnect with the rivers in their city. He hopes that each piece of art will encourage visitors to notice the wildlife and natural beauty along the chalk streams, from mayflies to otters and kingfishers. The trail offers a gentle and inviting way for people to enjoy art, nature, and the community spirit of Salisbury.
