Warner Music Group, one of the world’s largest record labels, has announced a new partnership with Suno, a technology start-up specializing in artificial intelligence music creation. This comes just a year after Warner sued Suno in a major legal case, accusing the company of copying songs from its artists. Now, instead of continuing the legal battle, Warner and Suno have reached a settlement and are launching a joint venture that could change how music is made and shared.
Under the terms of the agreement, Warner will allow users to create AI-generated music on Suno’s platform using the voices, names, and likenesses of artists who choose to participate. This means that fans and creators can use Suno’s technology to make new songs that sound like their favorite artists, as long as those artists have opted in. Warner represents many popular musicians, including Dua Lipa, Coldplay, and Ed Sheeran, though it hasn’t revealed which artists have agreed to join the program yet.
Suno, based in Massachusetts, has quickly grown to about 100 million users since its launch two years ago. The platform lets users create music simply by describing what they want, and next year, Suno will introduce a new, more advanced version of its AI music tool. According to Warner, users will need to pay to download audio files, but they can still play and share songs for free on the service’s basic tier. Warner says this partnership is the first of its kind and will open up new possibilities for music creation while making sure artists are paid fairly.
The use of AI in music has been controversial. Many artists worry that AI-generated songs could replace human songwriters and threaten their livelihoods. Warner, Sony Music Entertainment, and Universal Music Group previously sued Suno and another similar company called Udio, claiming that these platforms were profiting from copying existing songs and producing tracks that were almost identical to those made by real artists. The music labels described this as “wholesale theft” and said it was part of a trend that could harm the entire music industry.
Earlier this year, around 200 artists, including Billie Eilish and Nicki Minaj, signed a letter asking for stronger rules to protect human creativity in music. Supporters of AI-generated music argue that computers learn in a similar way to humans, by studying and imitating previous works. Warner Music Group hopes that this new partnership with Suno will help balance innovation with fairness, giving artists control over how their voices and music are used while allowing fans to explore new creative possibilities.
