A reggae music event in Norfolk is being organized to support people in the Caribbean who are still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Melissa. The hurricane, which was a category five storm, caused massive destruction across the region. Buildings were destroyed, power lines were knocked down, and many communities were flooded. As a result, many people have been left without homes, food, or clean water. To help those affected, Norwich Jamaica Aid is hosting a reggae night at Space Studios in the city this Friday. The event will feature a variety of reggae sound systems and DJs, all coming together to raise money for hurricane relief.
Finbarr Carter, a student enterprise officer at the University of East Anglia, explained that the response from local DJs and sound systems has been incredible. He said, 'We've been overwhelmed by DJs and sound systems from across the region who all want to give back to the island they love – an island that has given them so much. ' The goal of the event is to raise 'vital funds' for people in Jamaica who are still struggling after the hurricane. Norwich Jamaica Aid is a coalition that includes Rebel Lion Sound System, UEA Students' Union, the university's African and Caribbean Society, and other partners. The group has already sent emergency supplies to Jamaica, such as non-perishable food, medical items, and toiletries.
Finbarr Carter, who is also part of Rebel Lion Sound System, said, 'We want to bring people together through their shared love of reggae music and the place where it all originates, to raise vital funds. ' One volunteer, who asked to remain anonymous, shared that she has family in Jamaica and wants to help them and others affected by the disaster. She said, 'We need families here to step up and get stuff out there. ' The reggae night will run from 8 pm to 3 am, with performances from Ashanti Yard, Apex HiFi, Foundation Sound, and Free King Sound. Tickets are available on a sliding scale, so people can pay what they can afford, and all proceeds will go to Norwich Jamaica Aid.
The event is not just about music; it is about bringing the community together to support those in need. Organizers hope that the reggae night will encourage more people to get involved and help families in Jamaica recover from the hurricane. The reggae night is a chance for people in Norfolk to show their support and make a real difference for those affected by Hurricane Melissa.
