Artificial intelligence, or AI, is being used more and more in hospitals across England to help doctors diagnose lung cancer faster and more accurately. By 2029, the government plans for all NHS trusts in England to have AI-powered X-ray tools. These tools are already being used in about half of the NHS trusts and have helped over 4 million people get quicker results about their lung health. Mike Jones, who manages AI and digital projects at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, says that AI is especially useful because it can quickly look at hundreds of X-rays every day. He explains that the faster doctors can find signs of cancer, the better the chances are for the patient to recover.
The AI tools work by acting as a virtual 'second pair of eyes' for radiologists. They can scan X-rays and highlight areas that might be a problem. This helps doctors decide which patients need to be seen first. Before, X-rays were checked in the order they came in, but now, AI can move urgent cases to the top of the list. The technology also gives doctors a summary of what it finds, but the final decision is still made by the doctor. If the doctor disagrees with the AI, they can change the report or combine their own findings with the AI's suggestions. This way, patients get the benefit of both human experience and advanced technology.
The government says that chest X-rays are one of the most important tools for finding lung cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer deaths in England. More than 7 million chest X-rays are done every year in the NHS. With the help of AI, doctors can now analyze scans in about four days, compared to eight days for the most complicated cases before. This means that more patients can start treatment within 62 days of being referred by their doctor, which is the standard for cancer care. Ian Murray, the minister for digital data and modernizing government, says that AI is not replacing doctors but helping them do their jobs better. He shared a story about a patient who was diagnosed with a stroke in just three minutes thanks to AI, instead of the usual 60 minutes. This big time difference can make a huge impact on a patient's survival and recovery. The government believes that using AI in hospitals will help save more lives by finding lung cancer earlier and making sure patients get the treatment they need as soon as possible.
