A historic building in Kettering, Northamptonshire, is about to return to its original four names after being known as Cornerstone for the past two years. This Grade II listed building, which first opened in 1904, has long been a cultural hub for the town. The building is made of stone and brick, with a sign that says Public Library above the entrance. There are many small black windows, a large wooden door, and steps leading up to the entrance. Outside, there are bushes and a green tree, making the building look welcoming.
Since 2022, the building has been called Cornerstone, a name that brought together the library, art gallery, museum, and garden under one title. However, after a public consultation in February, the council decided to bring back the original names for each section. When the building fully reopens, the art gallery will be called Alfred East Gallery, the library will be Kettering Library, the museum will be Manor House Museum, and the garden will be Manor House Gardens. Each part will also have its own logo, making them feel unique and connected to the town’s history.
The gallery and museum have been closed for about a year because the roof was damaged. Restoration work has been ongoing, including repairing the roof with Collyweston slate tiles. The project, which cost around £4. 8 million, began in June 2025 and is expected to finish by the end of July. The scaffolding has now been removed, and the building is looking much better. The library will be closed on July 3 and 4, and will reopen in its new location on July 6. Martin Griffiths, the council’s Reform UK leader, said that the council listened to local feedback about the Cornerstone name and decided to change it. He explained that the new names honor the heritage of the site and each part of the building in a modern way. The community is looking forward to seeing the building open again with its original names, celebrating the history and culture of Kettering.
