Ford reached out to Small Films, the creators of the original show, during Bagpuss's 50th anniversary last year. He managed to sign a deal with them, and Daniel Postgate, the son of one of the creators, Oliver Postgate, was enthusiastic about the new direction and wanted to be involved.

The original Bagpuss series aired in 1974 and followed the story of a pink-and-white toy cat who came to life in a shop window. The show was created by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin, and Ford believes Firmin's beautiful designs helped Bagpuss remain popular for decades. He also thinks the show felt authentic because it used models instead of animation. The characters were physically present on set, similar to how the original Star Wars movies were filmed, which made the adventures seem more believable and engaging.

The upcoming Bagpuss film will combine live action and animation, offering a fresh perspective. In the original series, Bagpuss was like a wise grandparent, sitting in an armchair and sharing stories of past adventures. In the new movie, Bagpuss will embark on a big adventure himself. Ford is working closely with the families of the original creators to ensure the new film captures the spirit of the beloved show.
