She wants her art to make people think about how human activities, like building new developments and using pesticides, are destroying the habitats where moths live. As these habitats disappear, moths and other wild creatures are forced to hide even more. Gillespie believes that nature has always liked to stay hidden, but now it must hide to survive because of the dangers created by humans. She hopes her artwork will help people appreciate the hidden beauty of moths and understand the challenges they face.

When factories filled the air with soot, the moths developed darker coloring to blend in with the dirty buildings and avoid being eaten by birds. After clean air laws were introduced in the 1960s and pollution decreased, the moths returned to their lighter markings. This story shows how quickly animals can adapt to changes in their environment, but also how much they are affected by human actions. Gillespie made sure to capture and release the moths she used for her art in a humane way. The exhibition also includes other stories and images that encourage visitors to think about the impact people have on nature and what can be done to protect it.
