In the icy waters of eastern Greenland, a team of divers set out on a challenging journey to explore a unique and haunting underwater site. Led by photographer Alex Dawson, the group traveled for an hour across the frozen landscape, using snowmobiles and carrying heavy equipment. The temperature was extremely cold, around minus 20 degrees Celsius, and the wind made the trip even harder. When they arrived, they spent hours cutting a triangle-shaped hole through a meter of thick ice to reach the ocean below. Dawson, dressed in a drysuit, was the first to enter the water. Despite his protective clothing, the cold was intense, making his face feel numb. As he descended into the darkness, he discovered a graveyard of whale bones just five meters below the surface. Around 20 minke whale skeletons lay scattered on the seafloor, their remains trapped in the shallow water instead of sinking to the deep ocean.
Anna Von Boetticher, a freediver, joined Dawson in the water. She wore a wetsuit and could only stay underwater for about 45 seconds before needing to come up for air. The divers faced many dangers, including the risk of the ice hole closing due to shifting tides. At one point, Dawson heard loud cracking sounds as the ice began to move, reminding him of the risks involved. Still, he focused on capturing photographs to document the scene. The images he took show how whale bones, left in shallow water, do not provide the same benefits to the ocean as those that sink to the depths.
Whales play a crucial role in the ocean ecosystem. When a whale dies naturally, its body usually sinks to the deep sea, where it becomes a source of food and nutrients for many different creatures. At first, birds and sharks feed on the carcass at the surface. As the body sinks, it passes through different ocean zones, eventually reaching the abyss. On the seafloor, scavengers like hagfish, sleeper sharks, crabs, and amphipods eat the flesh, leaving only the bones. These bones then become home to special organisms, such as Osedax worms, which can break down the bone and feed on the fats inside. Over time, the area around the whale skeleton becomes rich in nutrients, supporting a wide variety of life. In fact, a single whale fall can support hundreds of species, many of which are new to science.
However, this natural process is often interrupted by human activities. Industrial whaling has greatly reduced whale populations, and many whale carcasses are now left in shallow water or abandoned on beaches. In Greenland, indigenous communities still hunt whales for food, using most parts of the animal. The bones are often left behind and may be carried back into the water by the tide, but they do not always reach the deep ocean. Even though minke whales are not endangered, hunting them can still impact the ocean ecosystem. Scientists believe that the decline in whale falls has reduced the biodiversity of deep sea communities, possibly causing some species to disappear before they were even discovered. By studying sites like the whale graveyard in Greenland, researchers hope to learn more about the importance of whales to the health of the ocean and encourage efforts to protect these magnificent animals and their habitats.
