Matthew Wright, an artist from Lincoln, has completed an impressive 18-foot-long ink drawing that captures the buildings along one of the city’s oldest streets. The artwork, which took about 800 hours to finish, stretches from the Assembly Rooms on Bailgate all the way to the Norman House on Steep Hill. At the center of the drawing stands the famous Lincoln Cathedral, towering above the other buildings. Matthew started this project in August last year and spent nine months working on it. He compared the process to having a baby because it took so much time and effort. Now, he is excited to share his work with the public. The drawing, which he calls the 'Papestry,' will be displayed at the Usher Gallery in Lincoln from June 20 to July 12.
Matthew’s daily routine while working on the drawing was very busy. He woke up at five in the morning to draw for a couple of hours before getting his son ready for school. He continued drawing during the day and again in the evening. On Fridays, he would go out to take photographs of the buildings he wanted to draw next. He also made sure to take some time for himself to relax and enjoy a drink. Matthew said he enjoyed the whole process, especially learning about the different buildings, their architecture, and the history of the street. He also liked meeting some of the people who live or work in the buildings he was drawing. He hopes that everyone who sees his artwork will enjoy it as much as he enjoyed making it.
The drawing is full of tiny details. Matthew made sure to include every brick, roof tile, and shop sign. Some of the shops in the drawing are a clothing store called Cahoots, a pet shop named Top to Tail, and Barney’s Pizza. The artwork is so detailed that it shows 270 yards of the real street, even though the drawing itself is only 18 feet long. After finishing the drawing, Matthew started scanning it into his computer so he could create items for the exhibition. He plans to frame the drawing and carry it by hand to the gallery for the big unveiling on June 19. Matthew is already thinking about his next project, which will be a drawing of the other side of the street, with Lincoln Castle as the main feature. However, he plans to take a well-deserved holiday before starting again in September. Matthew says making the 'Papestry' was a wonderful experience, and he is proud to share it with the people of Lincoln.
