Manx dancing is experiencing a strong revival on the Isle of Man, drawing people of all ages to new classes and community events. This renewed interest is part of a larger movement to reconnect with the island's traditions and cultural heritage. Dance teacher Gráinne Joughin has played a key role in this resurgence, and she is excited to see Manx dancing 'back on the map. ' She says that people are enthusiastic about joining in, as it offers a chance to have fun, meet others, and learn something new in a relaxed and welcoming environment. What stands out most to her is the sense of belonging that Manx dancing brings. She explains that Manx dancing is unique, with its own style and story, even though it shares some similarities with Scottish and Irish dance.

Manx dancing is a traditional folk dance that is special to the Isle of Man. It is rooted in Celtic heritage and is usually performed to Manx and Gaelic music. The dance features distinctive steps, arm positions, and footwork that set it apart from other Celtic dances. Historically, Manx dancing was taught in schools and celebrated at community gatherings, reflecting the island's cultural identity. Now, it is making a comeback as part of a wider revival of Manx traditions. Gráinne Joughin leads the dance group Skeddan Jiarg, which means red herring in Manx Gaelic. Her group recently showcased Manx dancing in Morocco, and she has started new initiatives to encourage more local participation. After launching a 'Fun & Fitness' community class last November, she has expanded the sessions and is planning more island-wide options for the future.

Joughin teaches people from age two to seventy-two, and she says many adults remember learning Manx dancing in primary school. This nostalgia shows how important the dance has been to the community. Younger adults in their twenties and thirties are also discovering Manx dance for the first time, attracted by the informal and accessible classes rather than traditional dance teams. Joughin admits that Manx dancing had faded away for a while, but she is determined to bring it back as a way for communities to connect. She believes the revival is part of a broader cultural moment, with increased interest in Manx traditions and the Year of Manx Language helping to make culture more mainstream. Schools are also getting involved, and Joughin has started teaching in primary schools, where children are enjoying the dance and benefiting from improved confidence, teamwork, and coordination. She works with education leaders to widen access, even with budget challenges. Her advice to anyone interested is simple: 'You don't have to be perfect. Just try – have a go. You might like it, you might not. But you'll be part of celebrating Manx culture. '

Manx dancers often wear traditional costumes, such as blue dresses with flower garlands or red and white layered skirts. Performances take place on stages, train platforms, and at community events, accompanied by musicians playing guitars and accordions. Groups like Scran, made up of young musicians, also participate in these cultural celebrations. The revival of Manx dancing is helping to strengthen the island's sense of identity and community, making it an important part of life on the Isle of Man once again.
