Climate change is causing roses in southern England to bloom much earlier than they used to, according to the National Trust, which looks after many famous gardens and historic sites. In the past, roses at places like Chartwell House in Kent would reach their peak in June, but this year, the first rose appeared as early as March. The main reasons for this change are milder, wetter winters and some unusually warm spells in spring. These weather patterns are making plants grow faster and flower sooner than before.
Rebecca Bevan, a plant expert at the National Trust, explained that while early blooming is not immediately harmful to the roses, there are bigger concerns for the future. The most serious problem is water availability. Drought, or a lack of rain, is the greatest threat to the roses. To protect the plants, gardeners are working on improving the soil, choosing rose varieties that can handle tough conditions, and investing in ways to capture and store water for dry times.
Christopher Lane, who manages the gardens at Chartwell, said that the lack of cold weather this year gave the plants an early boost. He noticed the first rose blooming in March, which is much earlier than usual. Other National Trust gardens in the south, like Mottisfont in Hampshire, are seeing similar changes. The head gardener at Mottisfont, Rob Ballard, said that after a very wet and warm winter, the roses started growing early, and warm weather in April made them bloom even faster. Because of these changes, the gardening team has had to adjust how they care for the roses, including changing how they prune and manage the soil. They are also dealing with more pests, since milder winters mean more bugs survive. However, gardens in the north of England are not seeing these early blooms, which shows that climate change is having a bigger impact in the south. The National Trust is working hard to adapt to these changes and keep their gardens healthy for the future.
