In a laboratory on the edge of Paris, a team of young scientists is working on a technology that could change the world: quantum computing. The lab belongs to a company called Alice & Bob, and inside, a technician named Rémi is adjusting a large, shiny machine called a cryostat. Some of these companies already have quantum computers being used in industries like Air Liquide, and Alice & Bob will soon join them.
Even though today's quantum computers are not yet more powerful than a smartphone, the technology is improving quickly. France has some of the best physics schools in the world, and several French scientists have won Nobel Prizes in recent years. This gives France a strong position in the race to build the first practical quantum computer. Peronnin believes that Europe has a real chance to become a leader in this field, especially if they invest enough money and believe in their abilities. He says that Europe missed out on many past technology revolutions, but this time, things could be different. If European companies keep working hard and stay confident, they might win the race to develop the world's most powerful quantum computer.
