The Great British Sewing Bee is a popular BBC reality show that searches for the best amateur sewer in Britain. In the grand finale, Órla faced off against Caz, 60, from Staffordshire, and Yasmin Proctor-Kent, 30, from Gateshead. The judges, Patrick Grant and Esme Young, challenged the finalists with three difficult tasks. The first was to create a bias cut slip dress, which required careful cutting and sewing. The second challenge was the Transformation Challenge, where contestants had to use sheer fabric to make new garments, showing their creativity. The final task involved trompe l'oeil, a technique that creates illusions with fabric, making the clothes look like something unexpected. This technique is often seen on fashion runways and requires a lot of skill.

Órla said her main goal was to reach the final, and her confidence grew as her designs became more daring and the judges continued to praise her work. She never felt the intense anxiety that some contestants experience. Órla started sewing at around 15 years old, inspired by costumes she saw on the Eurovision song contest. She enjoyed both the creative and methodical sides of sewing. Now, she is studying performance costumes at the University of Edinburgh, having switched from studying German. Órla is already thinking about her next projects, including designing a Halloween costume. She fondly remembers making costumes with her mum and sibling when she was younger, using simple materials like a glue gun and felt. Órla hopes her story will encourage more young people to discover the joy of sewing and crafting.
