Katie Cocker, a 30-year-old teacher and musician from Suffolk, recently completed an incredible challenge to honor her late grandad, who passed away from cancer. On Saturday, Katie performed an astonishing 300 songs during a 12-hour sing-a-thon at Chelmondiston Village Hall. The event was organized to raise money for St Elizabeth Hospice, the charity that cared for her grandad during his final days. Katie wore a T-shirt, glasses, and a grey beanie hat as she played her guitar and sang in front of a microphone, smiling for the camera. Even after the event, she said her fingertips were still numb from playing so many songs.

Katie’s motivation for the marathon concert was deeply personal. Her grandad died in June 2025 at the age of 83, and she wanted to thank the hospice staff for their outstanding support. She told the BBC that the gig was a huge success and that her grandad would have been really proud of her. During the middle of the day, when most of her family was present, Katie played a few songs that had been featured at her grandad’s funeral as a tribute to him. She chose to hold the event the day before Father’s Day, which made it feel like the perfect time to remember him. Katie said her grandad loved music, and she believed he would have truly enjoyed the concert.

The 12-hour performance was not just a physical challenge but also an emotional one for Katie. She was diagnosed with autism in 2024, so performing in front of a large audience was a significant step outside her comfort zone. Normally, Katie sings alone in her room and shares videos of her performances on social media. Singing for 12 hours straight was a huge accomplishment, and her best friend was there to encourage her throughout the day. Katie created her setlist by picking songs from her favorite playlists, the ones she listens to while driving or doing daily tasks. She took a few breaks for the bathroom and made sure to stay hydrated, but she managed to perform all 300 songs.

Katie’s grandad had been diagnosed with cancer in 2024 and suffered a massive stroke before being placed in end-of-life care at the hospice. The concert raised about £1,000 for St Elizabeth Hospice, which Katie described as providing an outstanding level of care. She said that the hospice staff made her grandad comfortable and peaceful, something the family couldn’t achieve at home. Katie felt that the hospice was the perfect place for her grandad’s final days and wanted to give back to the charity that had supported her family so well. She hopes her story will inspire others to support their local community and charities. Katie’s dedication and love for her grandad shone through in her music, making the event a touching tribute and a meaningful way to help others.
