Beneath the surface of the ocean, there are huge underwater mountains called seamounts. These seamounts rise up from the ocean floor, sometimes reaching heights of over 1,000 meters. One of the most interesting places for seamounts is near Ascension Island, which sits in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean between Africa and Brazil. Ascension Island is actually the tip of an underwater volcano. Around this island, scientists have found chains of seamounts stretching for hundreds of miles. When researchers studied these seamounts, they discovered that there were many more sharks and large fish living there than in the open ocean. In fact, the diversity and number of sharks and big fish were much higher near the seamounts. Some of these sharks, like the silky shark and Galapagos shark, are threatened or near-threatened species.

Scientists are still trying to understand why so many sharks and other top predators gather around seamounts. Some think that seamounts provide shelter, food, and places to rest. Others believe that animals use seamounts as waypoints during their long migrations. The volcanic rocks that make up seamounts have strong magnetic signatures, which might help animals navigate. The water currents around seamounts also bring nutrients up from the deep, creating blooms of tiny plants called phytoplankton. This attracts small fish and other animals, which in turn attract bigger predators like sharks.

However, seamounts face serious threats from human activities, especially fishing. Industrial fishing boats use heavy nets that drag across the seafloor, destroying fragile habitats like coral and sponge beds. This kind of fishing can wipe out entire communities of sea life in a short time. Many of the animals that live on seamounts grow slowly and can't recover quickly from such damage. Some countries and organizations are working to protect seamounts by creating marine protected areas and banning destructive fishing methods. Scientists say that protecting seamounts is crucial for maintaining healthy oceans and preserving the unique biodiversity found there.
