Two important organizations, Ofcom and the Information Commissioner's Office, have asked major technology companies to improve the way they check the ages of their users. The companies they contacted include Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Roblox, and X. These organizations believe that the current methods for checking ages are not strong enough, and that children can easily get around them by simply lying about how old they are.

Dame Melanie Dawes, who leads Ofcom, said that these companies are not putting children's safety first. She wants them to use better age checks, like the ones used for websites that are only for adults. Right now, most social media apps just ask people to type in their age, but this is easy to fake. Ofcom's research shows that many children between the ages of 10 and 12 already have their own social media accounts, even though the rules say you have to be at least 13. The Information Commissioner's Office also pointed out that if a company says you must be 13 to use their service, they are not allowed to collect data from children younger than that.

Some of the companies responded to these requests. YouTube said it was surprised by Ofcom's approach and thinks the focus should be on more dangerous services. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, said it already uses artificial intelligence to guess users' ages and has technology to estimate age from faces. Snapchat is testing new ways to check ages, and TikTok says it uses advanced technology to find and remove accounts that belong to children under 13. Roblox has added more than 140 new safety features in the past year, including new age checks for chat features. However, experts say that just knowing a user is a child is not enough. The next step is to make sure the platforms are designed in a way that does not take advantage of children's attention. The government supports Ofcom's efforts and says that no company should need a court order to protect children. Regulators and experts agree that safety should be built into these products from the start, not added later as an afterthought. This could be the beginning of even stronger rules to keep children safe online.
