A team of students from The Guernsey Institute has spent four months creating a large metal fish sculpture to help raise awareness about plastic pollution at the beach. The students, Isabella Batiste, Katy Allsopp, and Joe Mann, worked together to design and build the sculpture, which features a mouth that acts as a bin for empty plastic bottles. The idea is that people visiting the beach can put their used bottles into the fish's mouth, helping to reduce litter and keep the beach clean. The project is meant to educate people about the dangers of plastic waste in the ocean and how it affects marine life.
The inspiration for the fish sculpture came from a child's drawing. The students turned the drawing into a 3D model and then spent months planning and building the final piece. They had to make several changes to the design to make sure that plastic bottles would not fall out of the fish. The students learned how to weld metal pieces together and worked hard to make the sculpture strong and safe. Once the fish was finished, it was sent to the UK to be galvanised, which means it will be dipped in zinc to prevent rust and make the welds smoother. After this process, the sculpture will return to Guernsey and be placed on a beach, although the exact location has not been decided yet.
Katy Allsopp, who studies graphic design, explained that the fish is a visual reminder of what happens when plastic ends up in the sea. By putting bottles in the fish's mouth, people can see how plastic pollution affects the ocean. The students hope that their project will encourage people to think twice before littering and to take better care of the environment. They believe that small actions, like using the fish bin, can make a big difference in protecting the ocean and the creatures that live there. The project has already attracted attention and could inspire similar ideas in other places.
