Tilly Lawless, a student at the University of Brighton, has found a creative way to address the problem of waste at music festivals. Every summer, hundreds of thousands of people attend festivals across the UK, and many leave their tents behind when the events are over. According to the university, around 250,000 tents are abandoned each year, which adds up to about 900 tonnes of waste that usually ends up in landfill. This is a big problem for the environment, as tents are made from materials that do not break down easily. Instead of ignoring this issue, Tilly decided to take action. She collected tent fabric left behind at major festivals and concerts and used it to create a sustainable fashion collection for her graduate project, which she named Bâche. Tilly explained, 'Bâche is about changing how we value materials that are usually discarded and proving that sustainability and desirability can coexist. Rather than treating festival waste as an endpoint, I want to reposition it as a valuable resource. ' Her collection includes unique pieces, such as a dress with a hooped skirt made from reused tent material placed over a sheer black base. These designs show that fashion can be both stylish and environmentally friendly.

Tilly believes that design can play a big role in solving environmental challenges. She wants people to see waste differently, not just as something to throw away, but as something that can be transformed into something new and useful. Her project is not only about making clothes but also about changing people's attitudes toward waste and encouraging them to think more carefully about what they throw away. James Tooze, the course leader for product design at the university, praised Tilly's work. He said, 'It is exactly the kind of forward-thinking work that the future of the design industry needs. ' He believes that projects like Tilly's can inspire other designers to think creatively about how to use materials that would otherwise be wasted.

Tilly's collection will be displayed at the university's Architecture and Design Graduate Show until Sunday, along with the work of other students. Her project is already attracting attention and sparking conversations about sustainability in fashion. By turning abandoned tents into clothing, Tilly is showing that it is possible to reduce waste and create something valuable at the same time. Her work is a great example of how young people can use their skills and creativity to make a positive impact on the environment.
